Ton-up Jayawardene, Bowlers Seal Victory for SL

Mahela Jayawardene produced a beautifully crafted 144 from 150 balls, the highest of his 15 ODI centuries and his fifth against England, as Sri Lanka put the memories of their soggy defeat at The Oval to one side with an imposing 69-run victory in the second one-day international at Headingley.
Faced with a stiff target of 310, England threatened for a while, particularly while Eoin Morgan was compiling a 37-ball half-century, but eventually succumbed to 240 all out.
Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene's career-best century powered Sri Lanka to 309 for five.
The opener made 144 - Jayawardene's highest score in 343 ODIs surpassing his 128 against India at Sharjah in 2000.
A couple of reckless run-outs reduced Sri Lanka to 45 for two in the 10th over after England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to field.
But a record stand of 159 between former captains Jayawardene, dropped on seven, and Kumar Sangakkara, who made 69, turned the tide Sri Lanka's way.
Angelo Mathews kept the runs coming with a brisk 46 not out off 30 balls while Jeevan Mendis' unbeaten seven included a hooked six off Stuart Broad that saw Sri Lanka past 300.
Off-spinner Graeme Swann - who dropped Jayawardene - led England's attack with two wickets, both stumpings completed by wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter to remove Sangakkara and Jayawardene.
But the seamers suffered with Broad, Tim Bresnan and Jade Dernbach managing just one wicket between them for 203 runs in a combined 28 overs.
James Anderson's none for 44 in 10 overs was respectable in comparison.
Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan was run out for nine when he failed to beat Broad's underarm direct hit on the bowler's end stumps.
The tourists were fortunate not to lose Jayawardene soon afterwards when first slip Swann dropped a high chance off Bresnan.
Dinesh Chandimal, replacing the now retired Sanath Jayasuriya following England's 110-run win at The Oval on Tuesday, fell in similar fashion to Dilshan for five, only this time Anderson hit the stumps.

Brief scores
Sri Lanka 309 for 5 (Jayawardene 144, Sangakkara 69)
England 240 (Morgan 52, Randiv 3-43, Lakmal 3-43)

A New Look at The England-Sri Lanka ODI Series

Twelve weeks after the World Cup, England and Sri Lanka meet in a five-match ODI series starting Tuesday at The Oval with both teams looking to hit back from disappointing performances at cricket's showpiece event.
England was knocked out in the quarterfinals by Sri Lanka, which went on to be well beaten in the final by India in Mumbai.
England has three captains for each format of the sport and will be led by new ODI skipper Alastair Cook. He took the job briefly on the Bangladesh tour in 2010-11, making the best possible start by winning all three ODIs and both tests.
Cook has already made a better start to his captaincy career than Stuart Broad, who led England to a nine-wicket defeat in the Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka at Bristol on Saturday.
Cook has not played an ODI since taking on Bangladesh in Chittagong on March 5. Following Andrew Strauss's retirement from ODI internationals after England's disastrous World Cup campaign, Cook will have time to make the team his own ahead of the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand if he can adapt his test-style batting to suit the shorter format.
Cook attracted criticism for his slow scoring in the drawn Lord's test and there are questions about whether he is he the right man for the job. England was 149-2 overnight and working toward a declaration on the fifth morning. Cook scored only 26 of the 111 runs added in the two-hour morning session.
In 26 ODIs, he has scored 858 runs at 33.00 with a strike rate of 71.38. He has hit only one six in his ODI career, off Mahmudullah in Mirpur.
England has made numerous changes to its World Cup team with only five players surviving, though Tim Bresnan was unavailable when the squad was selected because he is recovering from a calf injury. Ian Bell should be back after being dropped from the T20 side on Saturday, his first omission from any England side since September.
Tillekeratne Dilshan is set to return for Sri Lanka after missing the third test at the Rose Bowl because of a fractured thumb after being hit by Chris Tremlett in the Lord's test. Sri Lanka has also changed its side because Muttiah Muralitharan has retired and Upul Tharanga is banned for failing a drug test. Allrounder Angelo Mathews returns after a thigh injury.
England was expected to win the test series, but Sri Lanka is an excellent one-day side and the bookmakers reckon this series will be a closer contest. Overall, Sri Lanka has won 19 and lost six of their last 28 ODIs, with three no results. Away from home, the Sri Lankans have won 10 of their past 15 matches. England has 13 wins, 14 losses and one tie in its past 28 games.< ^Previous Series=
There has only been one previous five-match one-day series between the two sides in England. That was in 2006 and Sri Lanka won all five matches by convincing margins. Sri Lanka is third in the ICC rankings and England fifth, with a 13-point gap between the teams. Another 5-0 victory would take Sri Lanka to second place above India and behind Australia. A 5-0 win to England would ensure both sides are level on points in fourth place.

Pitch and conditions
London's dank June has given way to a mini-heatwave in the two days leading up to the start of the match, although that is all set to end with thunderstorms forecast for Monday evening. The wet weather should have cleared sufficiently to allow a prompt start at 1pm, but the clouds may still be lingering.

Stats and trivia
•England and Sri Lanka's last meeting in 50-overs cricket was the World Cup quarter-final in Colombo back in March, which - thanks to their ten-wicket trouncing - also happens to have been England's most recent ODI.
•Inauspiciously for England, their home record against Sri Lanka is scarcely any better in recent times. In 2006 they were thumped out of sight, five matches out of five, with Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga racking up an opening stand of 286 at Headingley. Only two England squad members remain from that game - the new captain Cook, and the returning Tim Bresnan.
•Alastair Cook averages 33.00 in 26 ODI appearances, with a solitary century against India in 2007, and a strike-rate of 71.38.

Sanath Jayasuriya Recalled to Sri Lankan ODI & T20 Team

Veteran batsman  Jayasuriya's international career has been resurrected in the wake of a doping investigation involving Sri Lanka opener Upul Tharanga.
Jayasuriya, who turns 42 this month, will return to play for Sri Lanka in the upcoming limited-overs and Twenty20 matches against England.
He was included in a 16-member squad announced on Thursday, a day after Sri Lanka Cricket announced the official notification by International Cricket Council that Tharanga has tested positive for a banned substance after the World Cup semifinal win over New Zealand and that a disciplinary action has been initiated.
"Since there is an ongoing inquiry to verify this charge, Upul Tharanga will not be making himself available for selection until the conclusion of the inquiry and therefore will not be available for the ODI and T20 matches in England and the Sri Lanka "A" team tour of England," a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket said.
Jayasuriya has not played a limited-overs international for Sri Lanka since December 2009, and played his last Twenty20 game a year ago. His career was thought to be over after being dropped from the World Cup squad and failing to secure a contract with a franchise in this year's Indian Premier League.
Jayasuriya has played 444 one-day internationals, scoring 13,428 runs at an average over 32. He has also taken 322 wickets bowling left-arm spin.
Left-handed batsman Thilina Kandamby was named deputy to captain Tillakaratne Dilshan.
Dimuth Karunaratne, a 23-year-old left-handed opening batsman is the only uncapped player in the squad.
All-rounder Anjelo Mathews' selection will be subject to fitness as he hasn't fully recovered from an injury sustained during the World Cup.
Sri Lanka will play England in a Twenty20 match and five limited-over internationals starting June 25, followed by Twenty20 games against Ireland and Scotland.

The squad: Tillakaratne Dilshan (captain), Thilina Kandamby, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, Sanath Jayasuriya, Dinesh Chandimal, Jeevan Mendis, Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Tissara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Dilhara Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Suraj Randiv, Ajantha Mendis

Sri Lanka Collapsed on 266, Dernbach Takes Five 21

South African-born seamer Jade Dernbach made a late bid for an England spot in next week's opening Test against Sri Lanka when he took five wickets against the tourists on Friday.
Dernbach claimed 5-44 as Sri Lanka struggled to 266 all out in reply to England Lions' 493-8 declared at Derby.
"Obviously we are all trying to push our own cases forward to the selectors," said Dernbach in reference to the earlier batting of Eoin Morgan (193) and Samit Patel (119).
Sri Lanka's difficult preparations ahead of the first Test continued on the second day at Derby as their top order floundered against a strong England Lions pace attack. Jade Dernbach was the most successful of the quartet with 5 for 44 while Ajmal Shahzad and Graham Onions claimed two apiece as the tourists were bowled out for 266.
Sri Lanka collapsed from 59 for none to 97 for six, but recovered thanks largely to Suraj Randiv (76 not out) to muster 266.
